The college football season is headed into the home stretch.  More teams are now bowl eligible (we need 78 of them) and we have our first view of the leaders for the New Year’s Six.  Let’s take a look at where the top predictions land and keep you on the road to this year’s Mitsubishi Motors Las Vegas Bowl set for Saturday, December 21, at Sam Boyd Stadium.

THE CONTENDERS:

Mountain West: Go buy your blue and hit up EBay for some Smurfy-themed costumes.   Boise State is the clear cut favorite for a return to Las Vegas next month, as it is nearly written in stone by all the sportswriters and analysts.  Now, with the College Football Playoff committee landing the Broncos in the middle of their Group of Five teams, the Broncos could be Cotton Bowl bound as they might be the highest-ranked conference champ of the group.   Then the honor of Mountain West rep falls to San Diego State.  All this depends on Boise State winning out.

Pac-12:  A couple weeks ago, I said to mark the Oregon State/Arizona game as a possible Pac-12 checkpoint.   Oregon State took Arizona out, and now finds itself in the Las Vegas conversation for the first time.  It would be a solid feather for second-year head coach Jonathan Smith to get the long suffering Beavers back into the post-season.   UCLA joins the ranks as well.  Remember the calls to run Chip Kelly out of Bruins’ blue?  Not anymore.  They do need to get by #8 Utah on November 16th to make this conversation about a road trip up I-15 a reality.
