LAS VEGAS (KXST) - UNLV has named T.J. Otzelberger as the school's new men's basketball coach.

The university's athletic department confirmed the hiring in a tweet Wednesday morning.

Otzelberger, an assistant coach at Iowa State from 2006 to 2013, took over as head coach of South Dakota State three years ago, compiling a 70-33 record en route to two NCAA tournament appearances.

During his tenure, Otzelberger has earned a reputation as an offensive-minded coach with SDSU averaging 84.5 points per game this season, fifth-highest in the country.

The reported move comes two weeks after UNLV fired Marvin Menzies after three years in charge of the program. The Running Rebels compiled a 48-48 record under Menzies.
